Blood transfusion

For very sick patients, blood transfusion may be necessary.

Blood typing

We are able to perform blood typing to match your pet to a donor animal which reduces the risk of an adverse reaction developing. This can be done using our in-house test kits, with results available within a
few minutes.

Blood donors

We are able to obtain some blood products locally, such as fresh frozen plasma but a donor animal will be needed for whole blood transfusions. Any potential blood donors must be sourced by owners, and would ideally fulfil the following criteria:

Dogs:

  • Healthy, fully vaccinated and not receiving any medication other than a preventative flea or worming medication.
  • Over 25kg in body weight
  • 1-8 years of age
  • No signs of anaemia on blood tests (ideally PCV above 40%)
  • No history of a previous blood transfusion
  • Never had a litter
  • Ideally, blood type DEA 1.1 negative
  • Suitable temperament
  • Negative on screening for common tick-borne diseases

Cats:

  • Healthy, fully vaccinated and not receiving any medication other than a preventative flea or worming medication.
  • Over 4kg in body weight
  • 1-8 years of age
  • No signs of anaemia on blood tests (ideally PCV above 35%)
  • Blood typed (A, B or AB)
  • No history of a previous blood transfusion
  • Suitable temperament
  • Negative for FIV, FeLV and Mycoplasma Felis

Transfusion

We collect, store and transfuse blood aseptically within our clinic, under close veterinary supervision. All pets receiving a blood transfusion will be closely monitored throughout the procedure for any signs of an adverse reaction developing.
